RIP to Ibiza legend, José Padilla, who passed away aged 64 this week.
News of the iconic DJ's passing was posted to Padilla's Facebook page.
"It is with great sadness that we bring you the news that José passed away peacefully in his sleep on Sunday night here on his beloved island of Ibiza," it read. The note went on to thank those who sent donations and messages of support as well as the staff of the Can Misses Hospital."
Moving to Ibiza aged 21 he would go on to become one of the most influential people in the island’s music scene.
Along with a storied residency at Café del Mar, he created the club’s long-running compilation series and would be dubbed the ‘Godfather of Chillout’ after pioneering the genre with celebrated 10+ hour sets.
Tributes came rolling in from across the dance music industry, with Carl Cox saying;
"Today, I learn that I have lost a friend, and a true legend of Ibiza and his name is Jose Padilla, from the Cafe Del Mar, Dj series and sunsets of which moments which was created, by the backdrop of his music selections. Such a sad day, he will be sorely missed. Condolences to his family and friends, from all over the world."
Bestival founder, Rob Da Bank tweeted;
"So sad to hear about Jose Padilla passing.. he was a massive influence on me as a DJ from the first time @graphite1 took me to the Cafe Del Mar and Jose made me cry with a beautifully synced sunset... he made so many moments like that for people ... RIP Jose xx"
DJ / Producer Chicane said;
"So very sad to hear about josé Padilla, was a founder of the Balearic sound at the Café del Mar... I remember remixing one of his tracks a long way back.... 2020 is quite the year....... RIP"
