Jazzy M

Jazzy M is amongst a select group of DJ-producers credited with pioneering the growth of house music. He presented the first ever house-based radio show in the UK - ‘The Jackin’ Zone’ - which ran for ten years on LWR in conjunction with Jazzy’s record shop Vinyl Zone. ‘The Jackin’ Zone’ was also a career starter for Faithless’ Maxi Jazz, who made jingles for the show.

The list of customers who shopped with Jazzy at Vinyl Zone over the years reads as a definitive guide to the best in dance music. Pete Tong, CJ Mackintosh, Darren Emerson, Carl Cox, Jonnie Walker, Paul Oakenfold, Judge Jules, Danny Rampling, David Morales, Roger Sanchez, Nicky Holloway, Seb Fontaine, Pet Shop Boys, Orbital, Mr C and Colin Favour were all regulars at Vinyl Zone, exposing Jazzy to a plethora of names, influences and ideas.

Jazzy’s recording career has seen him work with a number of famous recording artists including Paul Weller and The Style Council, Jimmy Sommerville, DC Lee, Arthur Baker and Julian Jonah of 187 Lockdown and DYNK fame. His discography is impressive to say the least; the first release on his label Oh Zone was ‘Chime’ by a then little-known duo called Orbital. His first house production, ‘Living In A World Of Fantasy’ was recorded with Larry ‘Mr Fingers’ Herd and Robert Owens.

Jazzy M holds the distinguished title of the man who played the first record at London clubbing institution Ministry of Sound. As DJ for the opening night, he played in the illustrious company of Larry Levan. It is a testament to Jazzy’s prowess and unblinkered musical taste that after playing the opening night at Ministry of Sound, he remained there as a resident for 7 years. Indeed, Jazzy’s knowledge of music has been utilised by many people over the years. He worked with Pete Tong on the ‘House Sound Volume 4’ release and was instrumental in gaining exposure for early Orbital recordings when they were known as the ‘DS Building Contractors’.

Albums compiled by Jazzy included ‘House Hallucinations’ with Mike Sefton at A&M Records and a 14LP box set with tracks from 1984 onwards for Morgan Khan at Street Sounds. From his Vinyl Zone office Jazzy had a helping hand in setting up the open-air raves known as ‘Biology’. He played at Energy, Genesis and Helter Skelter plus many others.

In 1997 Jazzy introduced house music to Asia on Ministry of Sound’s groundbreaking tour of China. The tour took in 5 locations over two weeks and attracted major press attention, being the first tour of its kind in a new territory for both Jazzy and Ministry of Sound. 1998 and 1999 saw Jazzy regularly perform 6 hour sets at Ministry of Sound, where he showcased his versatile style ranging from the latest in UK and US house to almost-forgotten classics from years gone by. The same year saw the successful return of Jazzy as a recording artist. Sao Paulo’s ‘Be Yourself Be Free’ received excellent reviews and was single of the month in Muzik Magazine.

The new millennium brought with it Jazzy’s biggest production accomplishment to date. His track ‘Jazzin The Way You Know’ was signed to Paul Oakenfold’s Perfecto label and went on to become a club smash. The success of the single saw Jazzy flooded with remix requests and he went on to complete over 20 that year alone.

Maintaining a busy DJing schedule, Jazzy played regularly at clubs including Cream (Liverpool), Babooshka (Birmingham), Faith (Hull), Bed (Sheffield), L’America (Cardiff), Milk (Belfast), Frisky (Swindon), The Pod (Dublin) Passion (Coalville) and of course, Ministry of Sound.

He also made fleeting visits to such clubs as Shindig (Newcastle), Sugar Shack (Middlesborough), Basics (Leeds), The Space (Leeds), Traffic (Nottingham), Matrix (Reading) and Kinky (Brighton). Internationally, Jazzy secured an exclusive residency for Ministry of Sound in Ibiza and he made frequent visits to Tel Aviv, Greece, Switzerland, Dubai, Scotland and Germany.

2001 saw the release of Jazzy’s first major mix album, the fourth in the ‘7 Live’ Series, recorded in conjunction with DMC. The CD sold out in every outlet during its first week of release. Jazzy maintained a regular presence on radio since the closure of ‘The Jackin’ Zone’, doing stand-in slots for Kiss FM and, more recently, a regular show – ‘The Oh-Zone’ - on Ministry of Sound Radio from  4pm till 6pm each Tuesday.

Jazzy is currently working on the re-launch of his label Oh Zone Records and recently celebrated 25 years in the dance industry. He is currently touring the globe, adding to the 60 plus countries his love of music has thus far taken him to, and working on his autobiography. This ‘Godfather of UK House’ continues to broaden his horizons, and is a shining light throughout the industry.
