Andy D presents the Blurred sessions playing the best in undergound electronic music Broacasting twice a month.First on Saturday 12am -2am .Then repeating following week on sunday 2am-4am
Andy has been hanging around the dance music scene for several years now, starting out, as you do, playing house parties, before a chance encounter saw him take a crash course in the free party scene, playing alongside the POD soundsystem at festivals such as the now legendary Glastonbury. Playing with POD gave Andy a taste for all things dance related, pushing him to step into the realm of the club DJ, working his way up from a humble unknown newbie to a residency at the Ministry of Sound, London, which saw him along side Talvin Singh.
It was here at the Ministry, that a DJ called Darren Emerson, approached Andy after one of his sets in the main room and was over heard saying “ Fuck me captain, you know how to steer the ship…” before shaking his hand and walking off.
After his stint at Ministry, Andy decided to return to the free party scene, the music policy was less restrictive and the vibe a lot less claustrophobic than clubland, allowing him to experiment with different music genres. Andy’s approach to turntablism and music saw him become a fixed regular once again, on the free party scene. However, the honeymoon period was short lived, punters became demanding to play for and were a lot harder to keep dancing. Eventually he turned to the studio and begun to experiment with production.
A studio is hard work for a novice, after a few unsuccessful attempts at trying to produce a sound he was happy with, disillusionment set in and in the late 90’s Andy decided to take a break from the music scene altogether. He sold his records, got rid of his decks and went off to see a bit of the world, in other words, he took a well-earned holiday. The holiday just happened to last a little longer than expected.
In early 2000, Andy returned to the UK and eventually found his way back to dance music. In 2002, he packed himself off to music college in a bid to learn new studio skills and get his mojo back. It was here, that Andy met a young lad called Dan. Dan introduced him to all manner of new things musically, from quirky sounding beats, to the genres of electro of breakbeat. Andy returned the favour by introducing Dan to the sound of techno. Their mutual interest in music and growing friendship saw them enter the studio to work on projects together, writing and producing material under the name of Porno Breaks. College allowed them to finely tune their skill set and sound, the real world allowed them to release their material.
Porno Breaks saw a slue of material hit the record shop shelves with releases on Fat! (HashEater) SIC (Trippin Me Out) Control Breaks (8 Girl Orgy) and Sinister (Wasted Youth remix) as well having the odd unofficial remix (X-press 2 – KILL 100 / Underworld – LENNE PENNY / Scissor Sisters – LAND OF 1000 WORDS) doing the rounds in clubland with DJs Andrew Weatherall, Ivan Smaghe, Justin Robertson and Laurent Garnier all championing the Porno Breaks sound.
Awash with the sound of breakbeat and with Porno Breaks getting such critical acclaim, Andy thought it was the right time to step back into the DJ arena. Slowly he begun to experiment with the Porno Breaks sound using a set of decks, a couple of CDJs and the odd techno record. Andy’s firm belief of “taking the clubber on a journey” not just playing one record after another or just “the” one genre, saw him cropping up at club nights up and down the country.
His attitude and approach to music appealed to the audience who wanted to a hear a DJ with that little bit extra to offer. Playing alongside and supporting Paul Woolford, Miss Kitten, Darren Emerson, Dave Angel, Jeff Mills, Colin Dale, DJ Largo, Kid AM, Steve Lawler, PMT, Soul of Man, Trentmoller, Steve Angello, Nick Thayer, Paul Arnold, Precision Cuts, Nick Fanciulli it all got a hedonistic for Andy, and eventually resulted in a chance residency on the world famous Ministry of Sound radio station. Over 3 years later and Andy is still there today, with his show being moved from a Friday to a Saturday, to a Friday and then back to a Saturday, being given his favourite 4am slot to call home. His deep, techy, glitchy, druggy, minimal, beat driven, proggy, spine tingling, blissed out techno sounding style of music can be heard each and every week on MoS radio.
His blissed out approach to techno and the huge success of his radio show has seen Andy catch the attention of many a promoter, with appearances at Space in Ibiza, playing the Red Room along side Precision Cuts for the hardcore party people at the infamous We love Sundays@Space, as well regular gigs at venues such as The End (FAT!) The Cross (Minimal) Café 1001 (While the iron melts) Retox (Retox) Ministry of Sound (Off The Wall) and there are the trips to Austria, Sicily, Barcelona, Rome and Germany.
As for the future? Apart from buying a house with a garden and a driveway, there is production work on the horizon that will see Andy back in the studio as Porno Breaks as well working on various solo projects. Then you have the launch of the imprint “BLURRED VISION” which as a label, will showcase Andy’s distinct style and musical sound, as well as see the likes of Tom Pooks, Martinez and Pablo Bolivar all lending a helping hand with remix duties and the odd exclusive release. Then there is the odd sneaky DJ appearance to look forward too.
All in all, from where Andy is standing, the future looks very bright and busy and exciting and rather peachy in deed…
So if you want to be taken on that all important Journey on the dance floor look no further than the rapidly up and coming Andy.D, He WILL play with your mind!...
