And all the other music news you missed this weekend.

The nation mourns an icon, The Economist investigates club closures and Artwork invents a new cocktail

Iconic British Artist, David Bowie, Passes Away Aged 69

Just a week after releasing his land mark 25th studio album, Blackstar, legendary musician David Bowie has passed away. The superstar helped shape modern rock and pop with his constant innovation and has inspired generations of musicians. Bowie had been diagnosed with cancer 18 months ago and today his family confirmed that he passed away peacefully three days after his 69th birthday.

The Economist Investigates Club Closures In Europe

2015 was surely the year that widespread club and music venue closures finally made it into the mainstream news cycle, after reports that 1411 UK clubs had closed in decade 2005 - 2015. In late summer Boris Johnson set up a task force to protect the capital's venues and talk of a night mayor circulated towards the end of the year. Now the economist has released a Europe-wide investigation into the threats against nightclubs and found that, despite the surge in popularity in dance music, club closures have been prevalent throughout the continent. The report puts the blame squarely on gentrification and the proliferation of music festivals.

Feel Even Worse About January With These Videos From Holy Ship!

How's your January going? Sticking to those resolutions are you? Well if you're anything like us the first week of 2016 consisted mainly of quinoa salads and not drinking. Which means that these videos from HARD's Holy Ship! couldn't have come at a worse time. Yep, while we spent last week calorie counting and having early nights, these lucky people were sailing around the Caribbean on a party boat with Skream, Kaskade, Hudson Mohawke, MK and Jackmaster. Why is life so hard?

Jackmaster Celebrated His 30th Birthday With Half Of Glasgow

Speaking of Jackmaster, the Scottish selector celebrated his 30th birthday in style by inviting half of Glasgow (and half the country's DJs) to a massive party at SWG in Glasgow. Along with a set from the birthday boy himself, revellers were treated to appearances from Jasper James, Krystal Klear, Artwork, Skream, Eats Everything, Oneman, Kurupt FM and Denis Sulta. We can only imagine the collective hangover Scotland is suffering today.

Novelist Samples David Cameron In New Track "Street Politician"

A few weeks after releasing instrumental track "David Cameron Riddim", the UK Prime Minister has once again been on Grime artist, Novelist's mind. "Street Politician" samples a speech given by Cameron in the aftermath of the 2011 London riots. This is just the latest in a trend that has seen grime become one of the primary voices of political dissent in modern music.

Artwork Has Invented A Hot New Cocktail For 2016

While en route to Glasgow for Jackmaster's birthday, DJ and social media don, Artwork passed the time by inventing a new cocktail for the winter months. Using only the in flight snack menu and his own creative genius, Artwork developed "The Winter Mary". Ostensibly a hot version of hangover favourite the Bloddy Mary. Artwork's version swaps tomato juice for Heinz Tomato Soup. So that's tomato soup and vodka, for those struggling to keep up. We've yet to sample this winter wonder, but we're looking forward to reporting back to you soon after a taste test.
