Bieber, Jack Ü And Martin Garrix Win Big At MTV VMA Awards

The EDM crusade into the pop charts continues this weekend at the MTV VMA’s, as Skrillex, Diplo and Martin Garrix were commended for their services to music this year. Propelled by the help of Justin Bieber, Jack Ü took home the award for Best Collaboration as Martin Garrix was awarded Best Electronic Act, beating Calvin Harris, David Guetta, Avicii and Major Lazer for the prize.

Hosted by the unlikely combination of Ruby Rose and Ed Sheeran, the show practically dumped awards on Justin Beiber, who went home with five, proving once again to be the gift who just won’t stop giving.

Electronic Music’s Not Going To Stop Affecting Pop, Say Top Producers

In a super feature in SPIN magazine, top pop producers answered questions on the future sound of pop music. With a list including Diplo, Danja (M.I.A) and Matthew Koma (Zedd) some choice dance music related quotes included:

What sounds and styles are huge in pop right now that you think will be all but nonexistent in popular music five to ten years from now?

Noonie Bao: Big-room EDM and Dubstep.

Ryan Tedder: Dance music is historically the most trendy and evolving sub-genre of pop, and also typically doesn’t “age” that well. So it’s a decent bet that whatever is the hot dance sound or style of the year will not be popular five to ten years from now.

If the Taylor Swift of 2040 made an album called2015, what would it sound like?

Diplo: Probably like a cheerleader of an alien football team.

Who among today’s veteran producers and writers will still be leading the conversation in pop five to ten years from now?

Tor Erik Hermansen (Stargate): Skrillex will be the biggest producer in pop.

A Colorado Teenager Pulled A Gun On A DJ For Refusing To Play A Song

Meanwhile in America, gun control and misuse continue to be the topic of the day. The country's gun problem has now infiltrated the world of dance music after two teenagers were arrested at a party in Colorado. The teens reportedly prompted calls to the police after one of the pair pulled a gun on a DJ and threatened him and those in close proximity after he failed to play a requested song. Police arrived on the scene and arrested the teens for multiple felony charges. This comes a few months after an Indian DJ was murdered in similar circumstances.
