Superstar DJs
And Their Former Bands

A crash course in what your favourite DJs were doing before they were your favourite DJs.

A crash course in what your favourite DJs were doing before they were your favourite DJs

After an eight year stint with progressive house giants Swedish House Mafia, Axel Christofer Hedfors and Sebastian Carmine Ingrosso played their first gig as Axwell/\Ingrosso on June 8th 2014…. The rest as they say, is history. Their latest track "On My Way" found its way onto my playlist this week with twitter love POURING in for the track (not to mention all your tales from their recent London gig)! Given all the ongoing excitement I decided to throw a little on air party for the lads …..and what better way to honour the Swedish superstars’ anniversary than by looking back at other DJs and producers who have risen from the rubble of previous groups and went their own way in style?

Back in the days before "Bangarang", Skrillex AKA Sonny Moore was the lead sing of emo band From First To Last. He resigned in 2009 to work on his solo career which from what we can gather, is going alright.

Knife Party

Having already carved a successful career full of platinum records and chart stormers with their Pendulum bandmates, Rob Swire and Gareth McGrillen released a sample of music onto SoundCloud back in 2011 called “Not Pendulum” sparking excitement for what was later revealed to be the legend that is Knife Party.

Norman Cook

It’s impossible to talk about successful solo careers without mentioning a certain Mr. Fatboy Slim! From his beginnings playing with The Housemartins to late 80s success with Beats International to soundtracking a Levi’s ad with Freak Power (not to mention stints with Pizzaman and The Mighty Dub Katz), it seems Cook has the Midas touch of the DJ world.

DJ Fresh

Back in 1998 a certain fresh faced DJ was releasing with drum and bass group Bad Company. Their biggest single "The Nine" was released when Fresh AKA Daniel Stein was just 21 years young. Fast forward 17 years and Fresh is still living up to his namesake with "Believer" constantly raking up love over the Ministry Of Sound Radio twitter.

The Magician

Before remixing the like of Lykke Li and Clean Bandit, Stephen Fasano AKA The Magician had a soaring career as half of the nu disco duo Aeroplane. In 2010 Vito De Luca announced his former bandmate Fasano’s departure from the band over Faceboook- “Let's wish Stephen all the luck in the world even though he doesn't need luck, because he has got talent. He will be back with amazing stuff, trust me, I know him very well.”

Eric Prydz

Okay so he technically WASN’T part of Swedish House Mafia BUT….. Prydz, Ingrosso, Angello and Axwell used to have a weekly DJ spot at their local 100 capacity gay club, The Rainbow Room. It’s the kind of lineup that time machines need to be invented for!
