We have a quick get-to-know with rising UK house producer, XO
Last week XO released his hotly anticipated full length EP, Through The Night, and has seen support from the likes of MNEK, Cyril Hahn and Oliver Heldens, so we thought it was about time you got to know him a little better.
Hi XO! You’ve just released your Through the Night EP, talk us through the release, how did it come about?
I just felt like it was time to showcase what I’m truly about as a producer/songwriter and an EP seemed to be the best way to do it. I wanted to create three different, yet cohesive tracks in order to set the tone for what’s to come in 2015 in relation to my sound and direction.
What’s your story, how did you get into DJing?
Well, I was originally introduced to vinyl records by one of my uncles when I was about nine or ten, he had a set of turntables which I just used to mess around with, not knowing that I’d one day be involved with it all.
At around 17, I decided to go under the name “XO” after perfecting my craft and finding my feet as a self taught producer – the rest is history as they say! But yeah, it’s great being able to DJ, I mainly use it as an outlet to test new material and just play my current tastes and influences, as many do.
When did you first fall for house music?
Probably during my early teen years. It was a stage of my life where I really became involved with so many different musical styles, moulding the sound and style I have today. House music was just one of those genres that I felt I instantly connected with, it had always been around me and I had always enjoyed it, but it was only until high school that I started to appreciate the culture and history behind it.
What track are you obsessed with right now?
There’s a bunch, but I’m really feeling NVOY – “You Are” at the moment.
What’s the best gig you’ve been to and why?
Now this is a little bit off-kilter but I don’t care what anyone thinks, seeing Justin Timberlake perform live beats any club gig I’ve ever been to. The guy is a legend. And yep, that’s my reason.
What are your guilty pleasures?
Catchy chart songs. I can’t help it man.
What do you collect aside from records?
Over the years, I seem to have accumulated an abnormally large amount of bandanas, this was completely unintentional. Don’t know why, hardly wear them...
Tell us the most illegal thing you’ve done.
What’s the most interesting thing in your house?
We have a vase of peacock feathers? I think it’s an Indian thing...I don’t know...
What’s your lamest claim to fame?
I played in a school football match against James Wilson once, who now plays for Manchester United first team at the age of 19, he put like 6 past us I think. So yeah, I covered the same blades of grass as a future England star.
What are you obsessed with right now?
An app called “Keezy” where you can record in your own sounds and play them back like a drum machine. Proper addictive!
What’s your pet hate?
People jumping on bandwagons and doing things to look cool, rather than just being themselves.
