Matthew Burns was born on Halloween in Glasgow 1985. His parents worked very different jobs which entwined, created the beauty and strength shown in his diverse style of performing. His father was a professional heavyweight boxer and his mother, an artist. Burns began making music when he was 12 years old, playing the keyboard and guitar before engaging in sampling as a teenager. Again Burns’ parent’s taste in music influenced his style, as he listened to his mother's disco albums and became fond artists like D Train, Chic and Donna Summer and producers Quincy Jones and George Duke. His father’s love for Fleetwood Mac, 10CC and Supertramp encouraged his passion for Disco. Burns’ hereditary musical taste changed as he discovered French electronic producers of the nineties with the labels such as Crydamoure, Vulure and Roule and artists like Daft Punk and Le Knight Club. As he matured, Burns calculatingly examined the music which encouraged him to begin producing.
Aged 15, Burns had already begun producing his own tracks. He used a combination of sound hardware from the seventies and eighties and modern music samples to create his own experimental sounds. He started to produce demos on a grand scale, continuously mixing as he developed his signature sound.
In 2010 Deadmau5 hand-picked DJ Burns to be his warm-up at every US tour show that year. He is Calvin Harris’ go-to support DJ when he tours now and bands such as the Black Eyed Peas, Wolfmother, Ladyhawke and Frankmusik and more recently Rihanna have asked for remixes and production assistance .
In 2010 he released his hit EP ‘So Many Nights’ and then his compilation ‘European Sex Music’ won the committed approval of Mixmag and DJ mag, then NME, then national papers like The Guardian and The Times. He is now signed to Sony’s Deconstruction imprint, he was previously associated with 2112 records, and Burns has a new EP ‘Lies’ coming out mid-September. He is back now to perform alongside Calvin Harris, Michael Woods and Sheldon in ‘The Box’ for our 21st Birthday.
