You've had an incredibly swift rise as a producer/DJ - what do you think has been the catalyst for your rapid rise to fame?
I've been Djing and producing for 6 years now, I think I made some good productions over this period of time which have helped me gaining support from my fellow producers and build a solid fan audience. This, in conjunction with hours and hours spent in my studio, always trying to find the right sound, added to perseverance and the strength to work harder and harder, I think has been what drove me to gain some good results! :)
Can you give any advice on how best to establish yourself as producer/DJ?
Best advice I can give is always try to find your sound and style, work on it and define it, give the audience something unique where you can be recognisable, both in production and Djing, and never give up but pursue your dreams, even when you may find difficult times on your way, which is something that's part of the game.
We read that you worked for your dad's business for many years before becoming a full-time producer. What sparked your decision to pursue your dream in music?
The decision arose after being released on labels such as Noir and Cecille when I made Sweet Devil and Get Funky which both arrived No.1 in the Beatport overall chart, so I thought I was probably going towards the right way and decided to dedicate my days making music which was the thing I love the most....so I had to leave my father's business...sorry dad! :)
You've mentioned in previous interviews that you're into many different styles of music, including rock, disco and pop. What inspired you to start producing electronic music specifically?
Yes you're right, I think disco is what drove me to produce electronic music, I started listening to it, liked it so much and thought I could have made my own music, developing what I had in mind and doing it with my own style ;)
How would you describe the Pirupa sound?
It's a mixture of house, tech and deep sounds, with funky influences and sexy tribal! ;) I really like to space from one genre to another and mix them up in my productions and DJ sets.
We're massively looking forward to your set this Saturday - what does Ministry of Sound mean to you?
I'm looking forward to my set too! :) MoS has always been one of my favourite clubs, its history and its atmosphere are great, and I believe it's every DJ's dream to play there. Definitely one of the best and most renowned clubs in the world...and what a soundsystem!
What track are you most looking forward to playing at Ministry of Sound on Saturday?
I'm going to play some new tracks and edits I've recently done plus some other unreleased stuff, but I can't tell you more...so be sure to come down and have a listen!! hehe :)
Besides you, who else should we keep an eye on this year?
There are some very good fresh producers around, I really like Ruben Mandolini, he has had some good tracks out on label such as Snatch!, Suara, Circle and included in compilations by Toolroom and Defected to name a few; and Luid, I'm playing his track “Step Off” a lot and he's definitely one to watch with some very good releases coming! ;)
Any predictions for 2013, music or otherwise?
Well nowadays it's very difficult to predict what's going to be hot and in the new year, but I guess and I hope in a stronger return of tech house and techno after the last couple of years being more focused into the deep house scene.
What's next for you in terms of releases, and what can we look forward to from Pirupa throughout 2013?
I've got an EP on Snatch! which was released last week and it's already doing great on Beatport, it also features a track with my brother Leon, on top of an EP released on Material early in January. I've mixed the 3rd CD of the Miami Defected Compilation 2013, I have a remix which will be out on D-Floor in February, a new label by Leon, NiCe7 and myself, plus an EP on Bitten due in February and another on Intec due in April...plus something more, but I guess that's all for the moment! :P
See you on Sat, don't miss it! :)
